Business Data Analyst (Finance)

About The Role

Bristol or Stroud based

The Business Data Analyst will provide insight on the performance of the business to enable data-led strategic, financial and operational decision making.  You’ll collaborate closely with business subject matter experts and the data engineering team to gain a deep understanding for the way Ecotricity’s data processes manifest as data and own the function of the data model(s) describing them.

You will use your established knowledge of finance planning and analysis to build and present insight in an engaging and compelling way, using data analytics tooling to establish relationships within the data.  You will clearly set out the data requirements for development, including ownership of any non-functional requirements which validate the integrity of the data model.

About You

You will be a tech-savvy Data Analyst, MI reporting analyst or Business Analyst with a strong technical ability in analysis and problem solving, ideally with a mathematics or statistics-related degree, or a partially/fully qualified accountant. You should be comfortable building prototypes in both visualisation tools and SQL-based languages, which may include SQL, Scala or Python and predictive modelling using a tool such as R.  You will be a commercial and strategic thinker who naturally prioritises focus based on value and understands the factors involved eg. revenue, profit, reputation, compliance, and risk.   You should be able to confidently articulate a vision and negotiate the best possible route to success between multiple competing stakeholders.

What you will do


  • To act as the interpreter sitting between Ecotricity’s finance function, its stakeholders and the data engineering team.
  • Build strong stakeholder relationships around the business to develop a data strategy for how data will inform key business objectives.
  • Define and document clear data-model requirements to deliver our data strategy.
  • Define and document tests that validate the required development.
  • Interpret data, analyse results using statistical techniques and provide ongoing insight.
  • To be a subject matter expert on the finance and billing system processes and data including the surrounding ecosystem of systems and applications.
  • To be a subject matter expert in the desired business outcomes and strategic reporting needs to enable it.
  • Create and report on KPI's that reflect success, value creation and satisfaction with of our data strategy.
  • Be responsible for overall data quality, managing corrupt data and working with owners of source system data to resolve issues at source.
  • To build predictive models which pinpoint causality of business imperatives.
  • To monitor and steer the activities and behaviours of the wider analyst community, ensuring they work in a mature and respectful way.
  • Establish methods (automated and manual) which improve visibility across the activities of analysts across the business against a set of defined strategic goals.
  • Run and facilitate requirement gathering workshops with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Continuous monitoring of product-related technical debt, working alongside the developers to ensure that sprints have an appropriate mix of new functionality, fixes and on demands changes
  • Accountable for the secure handling of personally identifiable information in respect to the new Data Protection Act GDPR changes.
  • Representing Ecotricity within the South West Data community both online (blog, forums) and in person (events)

What you will bring

Knowledge, skills and experience:

  • BSc in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Information Management or Statistics.
  • Strong technical analytical skills as a Business Analyst, Data Analyst, MI manager or similar.
  • Competent with Tableau and MS Excel for data visualisation/manipulation to bring data to life.
  • Competent with SQL based data sources to write and adapt queries, working using transactional systems as well as cubes and tabular models.
  • Stakeholder management and facilitation of decisions of all sizes
  • Strong presentation skills for engaging senior stakeholders


  • Part/Fully qualified accountant.
  • Exposure to data science technologies including R and Python.
  • Familiar with Cloud-based data platforms and their advantages.
  • Atlassian toolset in Jira, Confluence
  • Experience of working with both front-end and backend tech teams to deliver projects
  • Knowledge of sustainability issues and a passion to fix them using technology
  • A genuine interest in sustainability and a desire to save the planet using technology.
  • SAP integration and architectural experience.
  • Salesforce integration and architectural experience.
  • Energy industry experience (non-big 6).
