Senior Commercial Analyst

Salary Details:
£30,000-£35,000 FTE
Advertising End Date:
24 Jun 2019
About The Role
We do an awful lot in the Trading team at Ecotricity. As well as purchasing all of the electricity, gas and renewable certificates for our customers, we are the team that is responsible for all of the customer pricing, forecasting, and cost/profitability analysis.

We love numbers, complex systems, and working out amazing ways to analyse data, use it, and share it in insightful ways. It would be fair to say that we are often at the cutting edge of a forward thinking energy company, and are constantly developing, adapting, and finding new ways of doing things.

For the right candidate, this role represents a unique opportunity to be part of a growing team in a fast paced and highly challenging environment.

Overall Description of Duties

An exciting role in the Trading team as part of the Pricing & Commercial Function, this role is critical to the business being able to understand the profitability of its customer base, both with historical data but also forecasting out into the future. There are so many elements, complexities and nuances that make up what profitability looks like for all of our customers, and this role is there to layer these together in an analytical yet accessible way in order to feed into a range of business decisions and reporting processes.

The role would be creating risk and profitability views down to an individual customer level for all customers. This will be mostly focused around model development, with integration of our data flow systems, data warehouse, and customer management software platforms.

The output from the models has a direct impact on business decisions at board level, and there is a lot of interaction with Senior Managers across the business, as well as Senior Analysts within Trading.

The role is a fantastic opportunity for someone that has a good understanding of how costs work for both electricity and gas industries and has a robust skillset in data analytics and system development (particularly Excel and SQL). The role is not just churning numbers out, but giving invaluable insight into what the data is showing, and helping the business to make key decisions crucial for pushing the business forwards.

Core Responsibilities

  • Developing the systems which are used to determine profitability at an individual customer level.
  • Ensuring that historical profitability is robust and accurate, taking into consideration all applicable elements.
  • Ensuring that forecast profitability is robust and accurate, and meets the business needs.
  • Working with the Pricing & Commercial Manager, Head of Trading and senior financial managers to report and give insight on customer profitability.
  • Working with the Commercial Analyst to feed in changes and improvements to industry cost projections into models.
  • Assisting with other areas of the business to feed profitability analysis into new commercial ventures and strategies for customer growth and increased profitability.
  • Working with the other areas of trading to ensure that the core models reflect the purchasing and pricing strategies.
  • Working with I.T. and the database administrators to ensure that the internal systems fit in with the hardware and software setup.

  • Programming language development ability (SQL, Python)
  • Highly advanced Excel and VBA skillset

About Us

Ecotricity is the greenest energy company in Britain. In fact, when we started back in 1995, we were the first green electricity company in the world.

Our mission was and remains to change the way energy is made and used – after introducing green electricity to the world, we introduced green gas to Britain in 2010 too.

Our model is unique: we use our customers’ energy bills to fund the building of new sources of green energy. We like to refer to this as turning ‘bills into mills’ – energy bills into energy mills, whether that’s wind, sun, sea or gasmills.

We’ve built over seventy wind and sun parks across Britain, we’re planning to build Britain’s first ever Green Gasmills, and through Britwind, our small wind company, we design, build and deliver small wind turbines to landowners and businesses throughout Britain and the world!

We don’t just focus on energy though – we built and run the Electric Highway, Britain’s leading network of electric car chargepoints, we helped Forest Green Rovers become the greenest football club in the world, and launched Britain’s greenest mobile phone service, Ecotalk.

We’re a not-for-dividend company too – which means we’re free to use the money we make for our mission and our mission alone.

We do all of this with the help of our customers – and the awesome team of people here at Ecotricity. Our people believe in our mission – they’re amazing at what they do, and they make a difference every day they come into work.
